Make it fun and silly
If you want your children to smile for photos, ensure they’re having fun. Set up a silly photo shoot with props and costumes and let your kids go wild. Encourage them to be goofy and make silly faces – the more ridiculous the better. Not only will this make them laugh and smile, but it will also create some unique and memorable photos.
A photographer we went with told my son, “Not to smile, just don’t do it” it a funny and silly tone. This of course, just made him laugh and smile. It was perfect.
Consider Nap and Snack Time
Make sure you choose a time that is not anyone’s nap time. It is not fun for anyone dealing with a crabbing baby or child that should be sleeping. Although we would have loved having our photos taken outside during the golden hour, with a one-year-old we had to go in a studio because it would require staying up too late.
Get down to their level
When taking photos of children, getting down to their eye level is important. This makes for better composition and helps them feel more comfortable and relaxed. They may feel intimidated or uncomfortable when you tower over them, resulting in fake smiles or even tears. Instead, kneel or sit on the ground and engage with your children at their level.
Don’t force it
One mistake parents often make is trying to force their children to smile. This can lead to fake smiles and a tense atmosphere. Instead, be patient and wait for those genuine moments of joy and laughter. You’ll end up with much more authentic and heartwarming photos.
Use natural light
Good lighting is key to a great photo; natural light is always the best option. Try taking photos outside during the golden hour (the hour before sunset) or near a window with soft, diffused light. Harsh, direct light can cast unflattering shadows and make your children squint, which won’t result in happy smiles.
Make it a game
Children love games, so why not turn photo-taking into a fun game? Set up a scavenger hunt or treasure hunt and tell your children they have to smile and look happy in each photo to find the next clue. This will keep them engaged and motivated to smile for the camera.
Getting your children to smile for photos doesn’t have to be a battle. By making it fun, getting down to their level, being patient, using natural light, and turning it into a game, you’ll create a relaxed and joyful atmosphere that will result in genuine smiles and memories to treasure. So the next time you’re trying to capture a family photo, try out some of these tips and watch the smiles come naturally.
