Symptoms of a Teething Baby

Each teething baby experiences different levels of pain and discomfort when they are teething. Here are some signs that your child is teething.

Symptoms of a teething baby

Symptoms can last for just a few days, right before the new tooth comes in, or for as long as several months if multiple teeth come through all at once. For a few very lucky babies (and parents), teething doesn’t cause any noticeable signs at all. What’s tricky is that there’s no single set of teething symptoms.

These are common signs of teething:

  1. Drooling
  2. Swollen, bulging gums
  3. A tooth visible below the gum
  4. Irritability
  5. Trouble sleeping
  6. Trying to bite, chew, and suck on everything
  7. Rubbing face
  8. Rejecting food or milk
  9. Grabbing ears

For my son, drooling, trying to bite, chew and suck on everything and grabbing his ears were the biggest symptoms we faced, with an addition to just being all round fussier. Your baby will experience some or none of the above symptoms.

If your baby has diarrhea, a fever, or a runny nose, don’t dismiss it as a sign of teething, especially if the symptoms last longer than 24 hours.

Even though many parents believe these symptoms seem directly related to their child’s teething, there’s no scientific proof that they’re linked. American Academy of Pediatrics and other experts say fever and diarrhea are not normal teething symptoms.

If you are unsure if your baby is teething do not hesitate to see or call your pediatrician. Especially in the case of diarrhea or other symptoms.
